From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
In the concluding book of “The Wild Magic” trilogy, Mup’s grandmother, in hiding, continues to plague Witches Borough with dark magic, which has also brought drought upon the land. While Mup’s mother tries to build trust among the citizens after taking over from her mother’s cruel rule, biracial Mup (Black/white) worries about Crow. The song her friend keeps singing feels like dark magic, and he seems to have conjured a being reminiscent of his late father. When Crow’s mother discovers he may have a gift for dark magic, she hopes to curry the favor of Mup’s grandmother by bringing her Crow, whom she kidnaps, and traps Mup into being her unwilling guide. The ongoing development of secondary characters is part of what sustains the freshness of this series with its many intriguing characters and strong environmental theme. (Ages 8-10)
