Book Description
for A Cub Story by Alison Farrell and Kristen Tracy
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A delightful, original board book is narrated by a bear cub. “I am a bear. Do you see me? All fur. Big claws. One wet nose.” The clever story works as a concept book in its comparisons of how much a bear cub eats versus a hedgehog (a lot) and a moose (a little). In the meadow the cub is “too slow and the elk thunder past me,” while near the pond “I am lightning fast as I gallop ahead of the snails.” The childlike sensibility of the cub’s voice is pitch perfect; the illustrations use a range of perspectives and page designs. There are some anthropomorphized moments, like when the cub is playing games with other woodland animals or describing how its summers are “always fun,” but most of the behavior is completely bearlike, and the details of the natural world will interest many young children. (Ages 1-3)
