Book Description
for Strange Planet by Nathan W. Pyle
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
The popular cartoon that describes life on earth as observed by aliens translates well into picture-book form with a particular focus on cats. Two purple aliens (a child and an adult) follow a household cat around, making notes on everything it does. “The creature walks across a table and shoves a hydration cylinder off! … The creature then begins to self-cleanse with its flavor muscle.” Mundane cat behavior is hilariously reported with pseudo-scientific vocabulary as the two aliens attempt to make sense of the sneaking, hiding, vibrating creature. The back endpapers include a visual glossary of key terms (rest slab = bed, group soft seat = couch, criss-cross floppers = waffles). Children who savor the linguistic humor may enjoy coming up with their own invented terms to describe everyday objects and activities. (Ages 5-9)
