Book Descriptions
for Market Day by Lois Ehlert
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Lois Ehlert drew upon her own extensive folk art collection to create the assemblages put together here to tell the story of a trip to a village market. The brief rhyming text helps move the action along, but the heart and soul of the book is the rich and varied folk art itself, which has been arranged into lively and colorful scenes from the narrative. “Where did they come from? What are they made of?” asks the visual glossary at the story’s end. Each folk art object used throughout the book is pictured on its own on these two wonderfully busy pages, with its country of origin and the medium that was used to create it also provided. There is much to look at and enjoy in this highly unusual and intriguing volume. (Ages 5-9)
