Book Descriptions
for Brave Deeds by Ann Alma
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Using a fictional narrator, Alma tells the true story of the Braal family, Frans and Mies, who as members of the Dutch resistance movement hid scores of children and adults in their secluded house on a coastal island and fed hundreds of others. The story spans the nine months leading to the end of the war, combining moving scenes of everyday life with suspenseful pas sages of near discovery. Photographs of the Braals and others mentioned in the story, along with artifacts such as ration books and ID cards and a map of Europe, underscore the story’s basis in reality; historical notes provide back ground information on Hitler’s invasion of the Netherlands and the Dutch resistance. 2010 Golden Oak Award nominee, Chocolate Lily Award nominee,
